Kgosi and Maswabi were arrested Hollywood-style by Magosi’s officers last year with allegations of them stealing millions and millions of State money. Now, it appears it could be the top spy’s turn for the run.

When contacted about the lurid details of misappropriation of government funds and property by Magosi, DIS spokesperson Edward Robert was curt.  “The Directorate does not comment on operational issues related to the upkeep of the Director General nor does it disclose particulars of operations involving other agencies to the media. “Commenting on ongoing investigations would not only be ill-conceived, but prejudicial as well,” Robert said. But allegations persist that because of rampant corruption at the spy agency, intelligence reports are manipulated and there are selective investigations intended to favour certain people. On scenting this, DCEC raided DIS offices.

On May 14, 2020 the DCEC accompanied by the Police seized some of the investigation files for some high profile cases.

“Some of the files seized relate to the Welheminah Maswabi and Isaac Kgosi’s investigations,” said the source. The raid was conducted in the presence of Magosi, State attorney, Priscilla Israel of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and attorney Joao Salbany of the DCEC.  “The police took all the files that Magosi’s team was investigating including those for Kgosi and Maswabi. The understanding was that the police were going to hand them over to the DCEC,” the source added.

According to sources close to the developments, the raid followed a meeting that was convened by President Mokgweetsi Masisi where the DCEC complained about the misleading reports by the DIS on some of the cases. It was at that meeting that the DCEC allegedly spilled the beans on the DIS boss.

Startling reports were to the effect that Magosi uses government vehicles to transport cattle feeds to his cattle post.

“On the 24/01/2020, the officer that he usually sends to his cattle post to deliver cattle feeds using government vehicle had an accident on his way back to Gaborone. The vehicle overturned and instead of reporting the accident to the Police, (the) Director General ordered that the DIS recovery vehicle must be used to go and get the vehicle to Sember Enterprises garage in Tlokweng.

“This is a garage that repairs DIS vehicles. The police never investigated the cause of the accident,” the source said.

The source said the scope of work for the DIS vehicles that are taken to a certain garage (name withheld) are inflated so that government pays more.

“At the moment, his Land Cruiser and his JCB are at this garage for repair. This JCB was clearing director general’s farm in Kweneng when it had a breakdown two weeks back. Magosi’s wife is transported to work to Molepolole by a DIS officer and back to her home. They use Land Cruiser Discovery belonging to government,” the source said.

Magosi’s wife is also allegedly transported in a government vehicle to go to their farm and social events. He is also accused of making deposits of P40,000 or more strange deposits into the bank account of one of his officers stationed in Molepolole, and then directed him to buy cattle feed for his cattle. Another Land Cruiser has been allocated to this officer, as he is a preferred person to deliver cattle feed to his cattle post.  “This officer is living in fear saying he does not know what he is going to say if these transactions are investigated,” said one of the sources.
