The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) Kweneng Region went to elections over the weekend at Dutlwe and Kgang Kgang defeated Motlhopi Leo for the position of chairperson. Leo was the incumbent chairperson while Kgang was the deputy secretary prior to the weekend tussle. Kgang is a well-known Masisi sympathiser while Leo is believed to be associated with friends of Jacob Nkate.

The former BDP secretary general, Nkate is currently the Botswana ambassador to Japan, and is expected to challenge Masisi for the presidency of the BDP in April 2017. Insiders at Kweneng Region said Kgang drew most of his support from Members of Parliament (MPs), chairpersons and secretaries of the eight branches.

Of the four MPs from the Kweneng Region only Takatokwane legislator Ngaka Ngaka attended. Ngaka was the host MP for the elections. Lentsweletau/Mmopane MP, Vincent Seretse, Liakat Kablay of Letlhakeng/Lephephe and Thamaga/Kumakwane’s Tshenolo Mabeo were not present.

From the information gathered by this publication Leo was supported by Mogoditshane Sub District chairperson, Duncan Ramasiagopana, his deputy Moemedi Mokgatshane and Leo’s running mate for the Kweneng District Council, Palelo Motaosane.

Kgang garnered 112 votes while Leo got 103 votes. Joseph Makati was ushered in as the deputy chairperson after getting 120 votes against Oreetseng Kenakgang’s 54. Hundred and twenty-three democrats voted for Oabona Thebeetsile while his challenger Christopher Letobane got 82 votes for the position of secretary. The vice secretary is Lefoko Kegopotswe who was unopposed.

Oabile Regoeng narrowly defeated Moatshe Bogosi by a single vote for the position of the treasurer. Regoeng got 92 against Bogosi’s 91. Bogosi then stood unopposed for the position of vice treasurer.
