Making a call: Motorsport wants to be considered for the Zebra fund

BNSC sports development director (technical), Bobby Gaseitsiwe told Mmegi Sport yesterday that they had received more than 15 applications from different codes. He said applications were closed last week. He said the role of his office is to go through profiles of athletes who had applied. Gaseitsiwe said after the process has been completed, the applications are forwarded to the Sports Development Committee, which is an independent body that makes the selections. He said the committee would select athletes who have met the criteria.

“The main objective of this Fund is to assist identified athletes with special training programmes to enhance their potential. The Fund covers preparations for international competitions in respect of approved programmes for identified athletes. The Fund is extended to cover official club competitions at regional, continental and world levels,” he said.

He said athletics, boxing and karate always seek assistance from the Fund.

The Botswana Motorsport president, Simon Modisaeman said they have submitted a proposal for Vincent Crosbie. He said the motor biker has shown commitment and passion for the sport.

He said Crosbie has participated in competitions in Morocco and Kenya on his own. Modisaeman felt that the time was right for him to be assisted through the Fund. He said the biker is targeting the Dakar Rally next year. He said if that materialises, it will be the first time Botswana is represented at the famous off-road sporting event. No immediate comment could be obtained from judo and golf officials.

Meanwhile, Gaseitsiwe said they have finalised the process of paying incentives to coaches and athletes who participated at the All Africa Games held in Brazzaville, Congo last year. He said they have been waiting for all the codes to submit their reports before the process could be finalised.

“It is easier to process claims when it is one team, but now we are talking about 16 codes. Some of them took a long time to submit the official results to us. That is why we delayed in putting everything together,” he said.
