One matter being probed by law enforcement officers is that of a 27-year-old man of Mmashoro who is facing a rape charge after he allegedly sexually violated his young cousin, a seven-year-old boy.

The incident is said to have taken place at their home at Bope in Mmashoro, a village located few kilometres outside Serowe.

The duo stays with their grandmother and there was nothing out of the normal when they went to bed on a fateful night, it is reported. The suspect shared the same bedroom and bed with the victim. According to the police, the suspect allegedly violated the young boy in the middle of the night.

After the alleged anal sex ordeal, the boy showed discomfort the next morning and reported the incident of the night to her grandmother. The parent then reported the matter to the village police which led to the arrest of the suspect on Monday morning.

Serowe Police station commander, superintendent Poloko Oteng said investigations were ongoing and the man would appear before the Serowe Magistrate’s Court this week.

“We registered two cases of rape this morning (Monday) and the other last week. We have made one arrest, while two suspects in different cases are at large and we are searching for them,” Oteng said.

In another rape matter that occurred between family members, a 23-year-old man of Sedumedi ward in Moiyabana allegedly raped his 17-year-old cousin at their home and fled. The assailant is suspected to be in Gaborone.

The suspect supposedly attempted to trick his cousin who was by then suffering from severe period pains. He told the victim that the pain would be healed through sexual intercourse. When the victim spurned the suspect’s sinister motive, he allegedly forced himself into her and raped her.

“After the incident, he escaped, he knew what awaited him. We have information he is in Gaborone, and we are closing on him. The victim has been taken for medical review and counselling,” Oteng explained.

On Saturday evening at Sebabi ward in Serowe, an unknown man allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl. The teenage girl was returning from the shops when he met the suspect.

The suspect proposed a love relationship with the girl who turned him down. He followed the victim and when she got near some old buildings in the locality, he grabbed and pulled her behind the buildings and sexually assaulted her.

“He had given the girl a name while he was proposing. It could be a true name or a false name, but that is what we have at the moment to search for the culprit, and we hope we will get the lead from the neighbourhood,” Oteng said.
