With just over a month to go and under two weeks before nominations, parties are yet to identify their candidates, whose names are to be submitted on February 12. The UDC has vowed to retain the ward left vacant after the death of  Makalare Ngomme late last year.

“We have three candidates who will partake in primary elections. We hope to do that soon and then work hard to retain the ward,” said the UDC’s head of strategy and elections, Ferdinand Kgosikoma.

The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) is also getting ready.

“Our local structures in the ward and Ngwaketse West branch committee have been discussing preparations,” said BDP secretary general, Botsalo Ntuane.

Ntuane said a decision to field a candidate or not would be made by the end of this week after consultations between the Central Committee and the relevant local structures.

The Botswana Congress Party (BCP) said they would be rallying behind the UDC.

“Our structures in the constituency will help the UDC on the ground.  The leadership will also help should the need arise,” said BCP spokesperson, Dithapelo Keorapetse.
