Close to 35 dancers auditioned. The dancers showcased their skill doing different dance styles such as kwaito, pantsula, dancehall, sbujwa and urban.

Unlike regular auditions where dancers are asked to exhibit their personal dance routines, they were taught contemporary moves, and also asked to display their personal dance routines.

“Basically, we are looking for at least 20 dancers. With these auditions we are not focusing on their contemporary dance moves since the genre is not that well known in the country.  We are mainly looking for someone with a good approach to dance and movements.  The rest they will learn from us,” Mophato Dance Theatre founder, Andrew Kola said.

He told Showtime that he was impressed by the huge turn out.  He said the talent was amazing as the dancers showed great potential of being good dancers in the future.  Kola in the company of other senior dancers from the ensemble were facilitating the auditions and also teaching auditioning dancers techniques of contemporary dance. He said selected dancers would be announced in the near future.

Kola said during this one-year period interns will be involved in a number of Mophato Dance Theatre’s activities, “those that will be fit enough for live performance acts will be part of our different productions this year”.

He added that some of the interns would be recruited into the group to become permanent members.

Apart from the internship programme, Mophato Dance Theatre also hosts free dance lessons at Stanbic Bank Piazza.

This year, Mophato is set to make a production adapted from the three chiefs who played a big role in helping the country gain independence 50 years ago.
