BNSC threatens to withhold grants

BNSC chief executive officer, Falcon Sedimo reminded affiliates, through a memo, that the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development (MYSC) emphasised the need for compliance.
“NSAs are expected to have submitted annual reports for financial year 2019/2020. We, therefore through this circular advise all NSAs who have not submitted the annual report for 2019/2020 that we would not be able to approve any of their financial requests until they have submitted,” reads the statement.
Some of the codes that are yet to submit are Botswana Darts Association, Botswana Golf Association, Botswana Karate Association, Botswana Motorsport Association, Botswana Primary School Sports Association, Botswana Softball Association, Botswana Squash Association, Botswana Taekwando Association, Botswana Volleyball Association, Handball Association of Botswana and Parachute Association of Botswana.
Others are Paralympic Association of Botswana, Professional Boxing Association of Botswana, Botswana Amateur Fencing Society, Botswana Badminton Association, Botswana Basketball Association, Botswana Billiards Association, Botswana Brigades Sports Association, Botswana Bowling Association, Botswana Cycling Association and Botswana Dance Sports Association.
However, some of the affected codes said they were not aware of communication from Sedimo.
Speaking to Mmegi Sport, BOKA president, Tshepho Bathai said he was in the dark about the communication from BNSC.
“(Our) Finances are with BNSC and we never submit financial reports to BNSC. However, BNSC just this week has paid for World Karate Association (WKF) affiliation. They also paid for WKF course fees for coaches, Re Ba Bona Ha project, issues of Audit Procedures and Internal Control Questionnaire. So, I do not know where this is coming from,” karate president, Tshepho Bathai said.
Bathai added on Tuesday he received a letter from BNSC sponsoring one karateka for elite sponsorship to Australia. Fencing spokesperson, Ewetse Khama said he was currently working on the report.
“The delay is (that we are) overwhelmed with other issues. Sadly, like our athletes in this country, we have to do two jobs, one for the sport as well as one for our livelihoods. I do not have any other reason for the delay of the annual report,” Khama said. BOPSSA president, Busani Segweni said they were not aware they should submit the audited report. Despite that, Segweni said BOPSSA report was ready for submission.
For his part, BSA treasurer, Puso Kgosietsile told Mmegi Sport that they were currently finalising the 2019/2020 audit.
“The audit was supposed to have been adopted by the BSA general assembly during an annual general meeting (AGM) that was scheduled for April. The AGM had to be postponed due to the national lockdown,” Kgosietsile said.
He said they could not proceed on to the next audit, for 2018/2019 before the other one is presented and adopted by the members.
“We are crossing our fingers that we are able to hold the ordinary general meeting (OGM) before the end of the year so that we move to the next audit of 2019/2020,” Kgosietsile added. He said the financial report was complete. Some of the members in good standing are BAA, Weightlifting, BoBA, Bridge, Chess, Cricket, BTA, BOTESSA, Traditional Games, Wrestling, Special Olympics, Botswana Football Association (BFA), Hockey, BISA, Judo, BONA, Rugby, Swimming and Table Tennis.
