According to Mahalapye police station commander, Superintendent Isaac Mmamadi, a young man aged below 25 years raped the old woman.
“The matter was reported to us by neighbours on Friday night, that an old woman was raped by a young man, who upon seeing them escaped the scene. The victim told us that when the young man arrived at her house, he demanded sex from her, which she refused. He then threatened the old woman with a knife forcing her to lie down, “said Mmamadi.
The police boss also revealed that at the time of the crime, the old woman was with her grandchildren only, whose ages range between 6 and 10.
“From what we were told, the poor children saw the whole incident and even when the rapist saw that the children were watching him he didn’t even react. Therefore, since the poor children could not help their grandmother, they ran away in fear to the neighbouring yards to ask for help.
Upon hearing that there were some people coming his way, the rapist ran away,” added Mmamadi.
Though Mmamadi said they have not yet located the culprit, he said they are hoping to arrest him soon as they know his identity. He added that though cases of rape are not that many in his area of jurisdiction, it is painful to see how youth disrespect their elders now days.
Meanwhile, the station commander said they are also concerned by the livestock theft that is trending in his area. He said they are investigating a case in which five men are alleged to have been involved in stocktheft.
He said on Friday they arrested two Zimbabwean men who are alleged to have stolen and eaten a goat in Mahalapye.
In another matter, Mmamadi revealed that they have arrested two Batswana men aged 31 and 52 years, who are alleged to have stolen four cattle. The third suspect is still on the run.
“The matter was reported to us by the owner of the cattle after he met the culprits with a truck loaded with his cattle.
According to the owner, the alleged thieves’ truck was heading to Mahalapye from Shoshong. He told us that he followed the truck and when they got to Mahalapye he stopped them and called the police,” said Mmamadi.
Mmamadi said that since the beginning of this year they have recorded a number of stocktheft cases. He said animals that are stolen include goats and cattle.
He said he is worried that most of the culprits are well known people and their parents always defend them. He said with the high number of clusters or volunteers that they have in the area, crime should be low.
He therefore urged farmers to take care of their livestock and always report the parties involved.
“As the police we are very open to the public and we still value confidentiality.
So if one suspects any acts of crime, they should report to us. We also urge farmers to form a committee and always come to our meetings,” he said.
