The workshop will be held a month before the actual marathon and it is meant to promote unknown heritage sites and educate the public on the importance of the heritage structure in Botswana.

The chairperson of FOMS, Itumeleng Botlhoko, said the workshop would target 40 unemployed youth from different villages.

“We will engage the youth more especially people who have shown interest in preserving our heritage sites,” she said. “We want to inspire them and they will get a chance to network with heritage orientated people.”

Botlhoko also indicated that they would continue to engage with the young people even after the workshop.

The founder of Heritage Marathon, Oefile Tladi, said the workshop and the marathon would go on despite financial challenges.

“During the day, DNMM will make a presentation on heritage sites and Botswana Tourism Organization will present on cultural tourism and businesses,” he said.

The Youth Development Fund (YDF) will make a presentation on its funding requirements while UNESCO will present on the educational and cultural activities it supports. He also indicated that FCB, LEA, BOSASNET, FOMS will make presentations at that one-day workshop.

Tladi said the February 27 marathon would pay tribute to Botswana’s rich culture and heritage by bringing together people from all walks of life. The marathon and related activities would be held annually to link different heritage sites and encourage patriotism.

“We want to encourage the nation to preserve heritage for current and future generations,” he said.

“Our anticipated outcome is to educate local communities on the diversity and types of heritage within their locality.”

The tickets for the marathon will be sold for P200 and the buyers will be able to participate in the main 21km race, relays, fun walk and a guided tour to David Livingstone Memorial, Manyana Rock Paintings, Livingstone Tree and MmaMotshwane Gorge.
