Olopeng announced his resignation at a First Division North meeting held at Kutlwano Police over the weekend. He has been at the helm for six years and is tipped to stand for a post at the forthcoming Botswana Football Association (BFA) general assembly.

“I have done the best I can and this time around I am not going to stand for this position. I am not leaving because of some failures or problems, (but) I am leaving because I have trust and I know you have great potential to take our football forward.

“I am resigning because I feel I need some rest. I will still be here to assist where I can. Well there are people that feel I can still be of assistance in football with the BFA. If people show trust in you, then you should consider them. I am going to rest, but because of my love for the growth of football I will consider them,” Olopeng said. First Division North secretary general, Rapula Gaotlhobogwe heaped praise on the outgoing chairperson.  “We have achieved a milestone under Olopeng’s reign. He has fought his battles, sacrificed his family time and we have for the first time under him had a committee that saw out its tenure without breakaways and not only that we have successfully been promoting two teams from our division every season in his tenure and that is a tremendous success. We have learnt a lot and we thank him.” However, Palapye All Stars chairperson, Molefhe Obenne expressed disappointment at the timing of Olopeng’s departure.

“In your six year tenure with your entourage, we have been able to finish our league on time. We have promoted two teams every season, but as much as we can draw a lot of positives we are disappointed with your timing. “We are losing sponsorship at the end of your tenure and we are disappointed that you don’t know anything about the Debswana sponsorship and we don’t know who to look to. It is disappointing that you are leaving us in the wilderness. We have sent you there to represent us and what do you have for us?” Obenne quipped. The DFDN league is scheduled to start this weekend.
