Night Terror Found Dead

His friend says the deceased was wanted by the police moments after he had broken into the home of a chief in Oodi village, where he made away with some items. A notorious thug known for shop breaking and out on bail for a string of crimes, Brian Matanga, was discovered hanging from the rafters of his house. Families and friends of the 25-year-old deceased said their suspicions arose when they discovered that his right eye was chucked out. The corpse also had a gush on the forehead and his face looked like it had been beaten severely.

One of his friends, whose name cannot be mentioned for security reasons, said he last saw Matanga when he went home to take a shower. The friend is also a partner in crime with the deceased, and is also out on bail for a string of crimes.

He also narrated how police officers had approached him at the Gaborone bus rank, asking about his friend’s (the deceased) whereabouts the day before he died. Sandra (the deceased’s baby mother) said the police only gave them the death certificate, but refused with the postmortem results. “When we inquired about it, they were really harsh on us. The next day we had to bury him because his body was starting to smell.”

Sandra further told The Monitor that all the family wants is the copy of the postmortem results. She added that the family does not believe that a passerby could have noticed someone hanging in the house. “The way the house is positioned in that yard it would take a very special moment of concentration to notice someone hanging inside the house. The police say he died that Friday, but other tenants said they saw him Saturday morning. “No one deserves to die like that even if he was a criminal,” the  girlfriend said calling for human rights lawyers to help them to get the postmortem results.

The acting public relations officer, Dipheko Motube said only the next of kin are given the postmortem results.
