No funds for Gabz roads

GCC had gone to meet President Ian Khama for the council to be given extra P200 million to repair roads through transport levy.

“We have a communication from the Ministry of Transport and Communication which shows that they had given us the money through our Ministry. Surprisingly last year November, we received a correspondence from our Ministry informing us that they now want to distribute  the funds to other  councils.

“That shocked us because our roads are really bad and more than half of Gaborone internal roads have reached their life span,” deputy mayor Kagiso Tshekega said.

He said at some point the Ministry said it could only give GCC P50 million which it hasn’t released for council to continue its work for certain internal roads to be done.

Tshekega said Khama had promised the council that he would keep on asking Ministry of Transport to give GCC certain money of transport levy for it to repair some roads.

Meanwhile, the permanent secretary at Ministry of Local Government Keaja Molefhi said the funds are  not for GCC alone but for all councils. “We have 16 councils and we are going to divide that P200 million per each council,” Molefhi said.

He said each council would give first priority to roads that it feels are really bad. Molefhi said other councils have similar problems of roads that had reached their  life span.
