The incumbent Tebogo Sebego announced that he will leave his post at the club if he wins the Botswana Football Association (BFA) seat.

The rescheduled BFA general assembly has hampered progress as initially, Notwane was set to meet and choose a new club president in September but has since postponed.

Lekalake is the younger brother to Mothusi Lekalake, president of the football side’s mother body, Notwane Club.

He is poised to take over from Sebego as the football club president. Chucks, according to sources, faces competition from former BFA vice president, Segolame Ramotlhwa and former junior minister, Phillimon Makgalemele.

“Chucks is most likely to replace Sebego. We are just waiting to see if Sebego will win the BFA elections. Makgalemele and Ramotlhwa are also said to be interested, both are long time members of the club. It is up and until we learn Sebego’s fate in the (BFA) elections, then we will see. Chucks is most likely to take over from Sebego,” a source said.

Contacted for comment, Notwane public relations officer, Mogomotsi ‘Ace’ Orapeleng said the club has halted all the boardroom proceedings due to lack of activity in local football.

Orapeleng said no position would be filled at the moment, as the majority of the work comes with the club being fully active.

He also could not comment on the aspirants for the club presidency as he said the outcome of the BFA elections would direct the club on the way forward.

“I cannot say, at the moment, who is likely to stand or who has shown interest. It’s all talk from the club members, probably of who they prefer (for the presidency). They are allowed to. As a club, we cannot move on anything at the moment because there is no football activity. We can only move when football is active again, to allow those who get in office to run their full period. If we elect now, whoever gets in office, their time will be eaten by the lack of football activity and that would not be fair. So we have not set on the AGM, we will decide once we know when we will be active again,” Orapeleng said.

“The president’s position is an honorary position, it is not elected like the other executive committee members. The club membership decides on who should take up the seat. Executive committee elections do not include the process of choosing the club president. At the moment, Sebego is still the president. He has not left but he announced to the club membership that he will stand for the BFA elections not necessarily that he is quitting his role in the club. Sebego could have announced that at the AGM, which was not held due to COVID-19.”
