He replaces some match officials who failed a fitness test ahead of the continental tournament, which draws together 16 teams.

Bondo flew out last night to join other match officials who include Botswana’s assistant referee, Oamogetse Godisamang.

This means the country will have two match officials at a senior continental tournament for the first time in history.

Godisamang became the first match official to handle Africa Cup of Nations matches last year. Bondo said although the call-up came as a surprise, he is prepared to represent the country with distinction.

“It took me by surprise as I had given up. Other officials received their tickets in December and I thought my opportunity was gone. But yesterday (Tuesday) I received a call from Rwanda informing me that I should be that side early Thursday morning.

I am not under pressure but I will go out there and perform to the best of my ability,” Bondo said.

The referee will now be eyeing next year’s AFCON tournament although he said it was not in his mind.

“I will perform without putting myself under pressure. I am not thinking of anything beyond the Rwanda tournament,” he said.

Bondo is probably the most decorated local referee having handled international matches at all age groups.
