Rakgare faces suspension

Although the party vice president, Kesitegile Gobotswang was evasive about what action they are likely to take against Rakgare, Mmegi has learnt that the youth league president might face suspension. Rakgare sits on BCP executive committee.

In an interview yesterday, Gobotswang said the Rakgare matter was internal and it would not be appropriate to share details of what action would be taken before it had been discussed.

“I cannot discuss this matter since it is still internal,” Gobotswang said.

Rakgare aired his personal opinion regarding opposition cooperation, his own party, and showered Vice President Mokgwetsi Masisi with praises in a local newspaper.

In the same paper, Rakgare said the position for UDC leadership should be contested for and suggested that the UDC should release the late Gomolemo Motswaledi’s report first.

However, BCP publicity secretary, Dithapelo Keorapetse said there was a thin line between personal capacity and official capacity when one holds a public position such as President of the Youth League.

Keorapetse said: “We all hold personal positions on different matters. The difference between a smart and responsible leader and an irresponsible leader is that the former will never give a newspaper his personal views on a sensitive matter such as cooperation talks while still occupying a public position.”

“The personal views more often than not, undermine the integrity of party leaders, and brings the party into disrepute. Rakgare’s personal views may have drastic implications on the mandate given to the BCP leaders by the majority of its members in Kanye and at regional consultations on opposition cooperation.”
