The sisters, Tuelo Mokgalo and Kgallelo Motlogelwa were badly burnt after the house they were sleeping in was torched, allegedly by a jealous lover. One of the sisters, Mokgalo, was pregnant when the house was burned down on that fateful night during the festive season.

The child miraculously survived and is now said to be at Princess Marina Hospital under observation.

The two Thamaga-born sisters died from third degree burns at the hospital on New Year’s eve and New Year’s day respectively.

They were buried in Thamaga on Saturday. During the funeral,  the deceased’s uncle, Moemedi Kearata told the mourners that Mokgalo was not a “nyatsi”.  “We heard rumours that Tuelo died because she was a ‘small house’ I would like to clarify that in fact after realising that Tuelo (Mokgalo) was pregnant, as is tradition, our family visited the man’s family to let them know that their son had impregnated our child. “The man did not deny responsibility. He actually responded by saying he intended to marry her fa a hetsa le botsetsi (after confinement),” Kearata told the packed yard at Phuduhudu ward. One of the two women arrested in connection with the deaths of the two sisters appeared before the Broadhurst Magistrates Court last week.

According to the charges, the accused persons, Caroline Gwamolamba (38) and Bakang Godisang (26), who were earlier charged with attempted murder and arson, now face two counts of murder and arson.

Only Godisang appeared before court last week. The court was informed that the first accused, Gwamolamba could not appear before court because of medical reasons. The case continues on January 18.
