Run his race: Olopeng says he will stand down at the next general assembly

Olopeng said he felt the time was right for him to resign from his position.  He told Mmegi Sport yesterday that he has been the region’s chairperson since 2009.

Olopeng said he would make the announcement to First Division North teams at a meeting to be held on January 16 in Francistown.

He said the intention is to give the teams enough time to identify a successor and for those who are interested in contesting to have enough time to prepare for their campaign. Olopeng said he has been involved with lower football structures since 1995 and has held various positions in the process.

Meanwhile, Olopeng said the league’s second round would resume on January 23.  He said before the round kicks off, teams will have a meeting with the league committee to discuss the first round.  He said as the committee, they felt the first round went well but that is not conclusive as they have to get feedback from the clubs first.

“We want the league to finish on time to enable the team that qualify for promotional play-offs to have ample time to prepare.

Play-offs are expected to be held before the (BFA) general assembly.  It is also a busy year because all BFA structures are going for elections and by the end of May everything should have been completed,” he said.

Regarding the Top 8 tournament proposed by the First Division South committee, Olopeng said he has not been briefed about it. He said as the First Division National Executive Committee (NEC) representative at the BFA, he expects the committee to inform him on the proposal.

“I only heard about the tournament through the media, but I expect them to brief me when they are done with it.  We can also assist them with more ideas on how to implement it.  I will also present it to the BFA.  It is a good idea and I welcome anything that can benefit teams,” Olopeng said.
