Financial woes: Nico, like many other Premiership teams, faces financial hardships

BCL’s poor financial performance is due to weak commodity prices.  Majombolo have enjoyed and flourished under a relationship spanning over a decade ago with the company.

This season, Majombolo, as Nico is affectionately known, has been blowing hot and cold, however, with glimpses of their mettle, as they managed to plunk stubborn performances against the beMOBILE Premiership’s tougher opponents.

Nico have been plunged into a financial crisis as evidenced by recent player boycotts.  The club’s spokesperson, Mogomotsi ‘Ace’ Orapeleng confirmed the team is submerged in a financial conundrum.

“BCL is still assisting us, but it is not enough.  It is not as per our initial agreement, but they are trying.

It is tough, we are relying mostly on meagre gate takings, contributions from a few supporters and selling replicas,” he said.

Orapeleng further said despite their financial challenges Majombolo will be active in the transfer window as they look to bolster their squad. He quashed speculation that some players are on their way out.

“Of course we will beef up our squad in this window. We are looking at bringing one central defender, a midfielder and a striker.  We have identified some individuals, but it is still an internal matter, we will disclose after formalities are in place,” Orapeleng said.

When quizzed if there are funds in place to finance the transfers, he said there are good Samaritans who could assist.

“Remember this is still the people’s team, we have good Samaritans in terms of entrepreneurs who are always willing to assist where necessary,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nico United coach Wesley Mondo who missed the team’s last encounter, a 5-0 defeat to Rollers prior to the festive break has not reported for duty.

Mondo did not forward any reasons for his absence and the team management is yet to establish his whereabouts.  Efforts to reach him were futile, as his mobile phone was off.
