Matsetsenkane face several criminal charges after terrorising the Thamaga community, committing various crimes, which left the nation shocked.

The notorious gang, largely made up of school going teenagers led by the fearsome school drop-outs, have for the past years taken to beating, maiming, robbing and even killing with impunity. Their murder and assault cases are pending before the Molepolole Magistrates Court.

Recently the group was taken on a rehabilitation retreat in Okavango by the government and BIRRO, an effort that has been described as succesful by both parties.

It is understood that the group has also unanimously agreed to form a football team to sway them out of their undesirable tendencies.

Mmegi has learnt that Mothusi, who has been a member of BIRRO for some time, has agreed to represent the troubled young men for free. BIRRO has been commended for their heroic identification of 40 Matsetsenkane group members who were identified through a snowballing technique. The technique works in a way that a person is identified and then he identifies another and so on.

BIRRO was courted by the government for assistance in the matter and has since interacted closely with Matsetsenkane in their efforts to rehabilitate and reintergrate them.

The director of BIRRO, Mothei Sejakgomo, revealed to Mmegi that, “the Thamaga group you are refering to is made up of our brothers and we want to help them to overcome these crimes.”

“We have been part of them through government’s efforts to rebuild them and even after completion of the retreat we want to say you are still part of us and we will support you to become better people,” he said, adding that if they ever needed any support it is now when they are facing trial for their transgressions. Sejakgomo confirmed that his organisation will support the group during trial and will also represent them through their member (Mothusi).
