Speaking to Mmegi yesterday, Palapye Police station commander, superintendant Waboraro Ramaja said he was grateful that his area was quite during the holidays.

Ramaja said in other areas there were police operations going on in Palapye, adding that this contributed to peaceful holidays.

“We did not encounter any major cases like murder, rape, robbery during the holidays because of the operations that the police had.  During the 60 Days of Action against Road Accidents and Crime, we did public education and it worked well for us.  We only recorded four cases of house breaking as compared to last year’s seven during the same period,” said Ramaja.

Bar operators were also patted on the back for their cooperation during the holidays.

Ramaja said all the bars were opened and closed on time, hence forcing people to go back to their respective homes.  He said the awareness campaign done by the police also contributed positively, as Batswana seemed to have considered it.

According to the station commander, no fatal road accidents were recorded during the festive period.

Machaneng police station commander, superintendent Peggy Vakalisa also confirmed that the holidays went smoothly as they did not record any serious cases.

She said the police worked after hours and made sure that all drinking spots like bars and depots were closed at the right time.

Vakalisa further added that his office also made sure that there was peace in their area of jurisdiction as they also did public education to enlighten people about the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse as well as failure to comply with road signs.

“Tswapong North was very quite during the holidays and we are grateful that Batswana cooperated well with us. Police took charge and all the bars were closed.  We made sure that there were no cars making noise. We charged all those who made noise with their car radios because we wanted to avoid crime by all means,” said Vakalisa.

Vakalisa also indicated that they recorded no serious cases during the festive season because of closure of drinking spots.

She said in most cases, crimes such as common assault, stealing, murder, rape and others took place at drinking spots.

Maunatlala police station commander, superintendent Ogaufi Enock also shared the same sentiments with other police bosses.

He revealed that people were so relaxed during the festive period, and their main concentration was on the football tournaments and choirs.

Enock said his office did not record any serious crimes on Christmas Day and on the New Year’s Day, and he saluted the well-behaved public.

He said the village councillor, Salome Lesole also did public awareness as she approached Tswapong South youth and educated them on good behaviour during the festive season.

The police chief said even on Sunday when the final match was played between Dinare FC and Maunatlala United everything went smoothly and no incidents of crime were reported.

“We wish they (Botswana) can behave like that even in the coming holidays. They made our work easier as the police and we are grateful for that,” he said.
