Christmas Soccer Tournaments Kick-Off Countrywide

It is during this period that places such as Thamaga, North East and Tswapong host some of the biggest tournaments.

Eight teams from the villages of Marobela, Tjizwina, Makaleng and Nshakashogwe will battle it out in the second edition of Matjimansha Soccer Festival billed for Shangano Junior Secondary School grounds.

The tournament kicks-off on Christmas Day and the final is on December 31st. The tournament organiser, Mothusi Jowawa told Monitor Sport yesterday that the eight teams participating in the tournament are Maenje, Mafungo, Bafana Stars, Maratakgosi, Marula, Youngsters, Home Sweepers and Mashulanga. 

He said the winner of the tournament walks away with a cash prize of P10,000 with the second prize as P7,500 and third prize being P5,000.  The team that finishes in forth place takes P2,500 and the last four teams take home P1,500 each.

“We have provided each team with a playing kit and each team has been provided with 25 replica t-shirts that they can sell to their supporters as a way of raising funds.  We also plan to assist in the development of the school grounds that we will be using,” he said.

Another interesting tournament is expected in Lekgolwe village near Tsetsebye.  Teams that will be playing are Marobaphuti, City Boys, Matlhakoleng, Matsetsejwane and Mhawana.

Meanwhile, the annual Thamaga Christmas Charity Tournament will be held under the theme, ‘Put Drugs Down, Play Sport’.

The tournament starts on December 25 and ends on the 28th.  Teams that will compete are Thamaga Swallows, Black Forest, Thamaga Shooting Stars, Tourism, Sanyane Celtics, Thamaga Blue Aces, Kgabosetso and Kumakwane Stars.

The winner of the tournament pockets P12,500, second prize is P7,500 and third prize is P5,000.

 The team that comes forth gets P4,000 while teams in position five and six take P3,000 each while teams in position seven and eight get P2,000 each. 

 The tournament organiser, Tiro Lepokisi said Pro Guard Security, O3, Footballers Union of Botswana, Security Systems, Kings Bar and Riverside Bar are sponsoring the tournament.
