The club said the move is part of a revamp of the secretariat. Motsewakhumo has been handed a one-year contract. “We appointed him more than two months ago, but he could not join the club then because of the lockdown in Gaborone. He has been from his base in Gaborone. He relocated to Sua Town this month. We felt he is the most suitable person to lead the transformation of the club. We have an option to renew his contract depending on his performance,” Sua Flamingoes chairperson, Tirelo Thebe said yesterday.

“For now he will have someone who will assist him to run the affairs of the club on a daily basis. The main intention is to beef up the secretariat beginning next year to effectively roll out our five-year strategy.”

Thebe indicated the strategy would be rolled out starting at the beginning of next year. The club recently hired one of the country’s highly respected football administrators, Ashford Mamelodi, to facilitate the drawing of the strategy.

The strategy aims to transform the club into a commercial entity that can sustain itself.

In May this year, Flamingoes’ annual general meeting (AGM) recommended that the club should come up with a robust commercialisation strategy to ensure survival in the elite league.

“One of the key components of our recently completed strategy is that we should form strong partnerships with schools within our vicinity and help them develop players at a grassroots level.

We will be supporting them with various resources and expertise. The goal is to have those schools feed our first team with players on a regular basis. This would ultimately mean that we will not be spending a lot of money buying players,” Thebe said.

Thebe said Flamingoes’ aim is to finish in the top four in their first season in the Premiership.

“The initial target for the club executive was to survive relegation, but the sponsor later gave us a mandate to finish in the top four. The position of the sponsor is that there is no reason why the club should not finish in a respectable position while it is adequately resourced.”

The majority of the club’s funding is from sodium products producer, Botswana Ash.
