Landless: BRU wants to build a stadium but their piece of land has been repossessed

In 2015, the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) allocated a piece of land to the BRU, but years passed by without any developments.

A few weeks ago, the BRU made a follow up on the plot only to be informed that it has been taken back. Rugby has been advised to apply for another plot. Simon Kanaimba who has been tasked with overseeing the project said they submitted a

proposal to the BNSC regarding the construction of a rugby stadium. “We were informed that the land has been reclaimed by BNSC, but there is no official communication on that regard. We have been told to reapply and state who would be financing the project,” he said. He added the BNSC has informed BRU that the government does not have money to fund the project.

“The BNSC wishes to acknowledge receipt of the letter.

Please note that from the discussions that BRU is requested to provide us with all the details of construction and financials to be shared with the

board,” reads a letter from Thabo Mampane, BNSC’s acting director for Lands and Facilities. Kanaimba said the intention is to build the stadium in phases and it is not clear how much it would cost. According to information reaching this publication, the rugby board met with BNSC this week and some of the issues that were discussed

included the plot.

It is said the BNSC board claimed that they were not aware that the land had been repossessed. Efforts to get a comment from BNSC board chairperson, Marumo Morule proved futile as

his mobile phone rang unanswered.
