Nurses� union row lands in court

Unangoni Modo, the vice president of professional affairs and Mmabotswana Rankgomo, the national education coordinator, say their fellow executive members have violated the union’s constitution.
According to papers filed in court, Modo and Rankgomo say BONU’s executive committee postponed the union’s Annual General conference in violation of the constitution.
“The constitution of the union allows the executive committee to hold office for a period of three years and every member shall have a limited term of office of two consecutive terms.
“The current executive comiitee of BONU was elected during the Annual General Conference held in Francistown from the October 25 – 26, 2012.
“The decision of the committee to postpone the Annual General conference is unlawful and therefore null and void,” the duo’s papers state.
The two suspended members also want BONU’s president to issue written notice to branch members within 60 days for the holding of the Annual General conference.
“The effect of postponing the Annual General conference for a year shall invariably extend the tenure of office of the executive committee by default as a new committee will not be voted into power due to the postponement,” Modo and Rankgomo argue.
They also want the union’s leadership to stop all activities related to infrastructure development and put on ice a proposal to increase membership subscriptions.
The case is due in court today as BONU did not file papers of defence yesterday.
