Marathon to promote heritage sites

The brainchild of the marathon, Oefile Tladi told Showbiz that he came up with the idea four months ago because he wanted to teach the nation about heritage preservation.  “We want the nation to take part in ensuring that heritage sites are developed in order to attract tourists,” he said.

Tladi added that they are in partnership with the National Museum and they want to help in promoting heritage sites.  He said their intention is to start with a workshop prior to the marathon.

“We also want to engage other relevant stakeholders to come on board,” he said.

Tladi said they want the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture to get involved in the project.  “We want to assemble them so that we get varying ideas on how to further improve our heritage sites,” he said.

Tladi said the marathon will be an annual event and would be hosted in different places in the coming years.

“We are targeting 500 people to participate in the heritage marathon,” he said.  Tladi said they have not found a main sponsor, but they have already finished with the logistics.

“We are affiliated with Lefika Athletics, which is an affiliate of Botswana Athletics Association,” he explained.  Tladi said the marathon would start in the morning of February 27.

“We also want to invite the relevant minister to address the nation,” he said.  Afterwards, he said, there would be a motorcade to visit the nearby accessible heritage sites. “We aim to show the sites to everyone at the marathon,” he said.
