Kutlwano beat Swaziland Correctional Services 3-1 while Mafolofolo eased past Swaziland Royal Police 3-0. In another women’s match played on Monday, Kalavango hammered another home side, Bob Ladies 3-0.

It was a different story however for men’s teams with Spiking Stars going down 1-3 to Support Unit from Zimbabwe. Police VI also saw their campaign get off to a bad start when they lost 1-3 to a Mozambique team. Kutlwano men’s team saved the day with a 3-0 win over Royal Swazi Police.

Botswana’s representatives at the competition qualified through the Capital Motors tournament that was played in September. The Botswana Volleyball Federation (BVF) vice president, George Keotsenye said they took a decision to extend the invitation to teams that finished in position one up to four.

He said the normal practice was that federations were given two slots, but it was up to each country to decide on qualification criteria. He said BVF took advantage of countries that sent one or two teams.

“We want the players to use the championship to gain experience that will be of benefit to other teams back home as well as the national team hence we sent six teams,” he said.

Keotsenye said the results so far, especially in the women’s competition, were an indication that volleyball was growing in Botswana.

He said the federation wanted to see volleyball become one of the codes that dominated regional competitions. He said that could only happen if there was strong development of players from grassroots. The competition ends on Saturday.
