Granny, infant die in combi accident

District Traffic Officer in Mochudi, Peter Tsheboeng told Mmegi the accident happened at around 7:30 pm.  He said the mini bus was headed to Gaborone from Lerala.

“Investigations are underway, but at the moment the police can confirm that the driver of the combi lost control resulting in the combi reeling off the road,” he said. The traffic boss further stated the combi had 13 passengers including the driver.

“Whilst two lost their lives at the accident scene, the other 11 have been hospitalised in a critical state,” said Tsheboeng.

According to their statistics, from the beginning of year to date, the Kgatleng policing district has registered 13 fatal accidents in which 14 deaths were reported.  Compared to last year, only 12 fatal accidents with 13 deaths were registered.

Meanwhile, a statement from the Ministry of Transport and Communications in regard to the amendment of the Road Traffic Act regulations indicates that a holder of a driver’s licence issued in a SADC country may not convert theirs to a Botswana driver’s licence whilst staying in Botswana. However, upon expiry of such licence, the holder may choose to convert or renew their original licence.

“Regulation 13 has been amended to exempt holders of Class B, EB, C1, C, EC1, EC from holding Class F driving licence.  This means that a licence holder of Class B, EB, C1, C EC1, EC can use it to drive a tractor without necessarily acquiring a Class F. Regulations 13 sub-regulation 9 (i) is amended by increasing the validity of driving test result (theory and practical) from 12 months to 24 months.  This is to alleviate a situation whereby a learner driver’s results expire before they could complete the test circle,” reads the amended act.
