Francistown Wins Big At Botswana Games

After eight days of gold hunting, Francistown scooped 42 gold medals in a haul of 106 medals. Southern district finished a distant second with 39 medals (14 gold, 11 silver and 14 bronze).

Gaborone was third with 12 gold medals from a total of 45, which included eight silver medals and 19 bronze. The North West, with 55 medals was fourth followed by Kweneng (39) and Central (30). South East was seventh with 11 medals which included five gold while North East, with 16 medals was eighth and Selebi-Phikwe ninth with 19. Kgatleng was number 10 with 12 medals while Lobatse had eight and Jwaneng seven. Sowa took position 13 with 10 medals followed by Chobe with six and Gantsi five. Kgalagadi took the last spot with four medals.  The quality, and not the quantity of medals, determines log positions. Team Francistown chairperson, Thabo Mokoti said the overall results were the outcome of good preparation.

“We are a very happy, our preparations were timely and spot on. We camped well on time, we chose very experienced officials who selected very talented boys and girls and they outdid themselves, we believed in them and we are very proud of them.

“We want to make sure this talent does not go to waste, we have to capitalise on this achievement and get investors on board. We are going to make sure these children are going to be absorbed into local teams. We also want to start some other teams to keep them busy. It’s a challenge for us, stakeholders and all the people of Francistown,” Mokoti said.

He said their victory was evidence that there was abundant talent in Francistown.
