Kweneng battle Gaborone for fifth position

Kweneng finished third in Pool II while Selebi-Phikwe had finished fourth in Pool I.  Against Selebi-Phikwe, Kweneng started with the upper hand and dominated all four quarters after winning the first 20-4. They increased their lead to 44-6 in the second before finishing the third 56-12 ahead.

Favoured by their height, Kweneng was in total control with good movement from centre player, Lone Serameng, goal attacker, Pearl Keojele and goal shooter, Laone Montwedi.

Montwedi utilised centre passes to score points with the help of Keojele.  Selebi-Phikwe was undone by their long and high balls as players failed to control.

Disadvantaged by their height, Selebi-Phikwe struggled to jump higher than their opponents which meant they could not win the high balls.

Kweneng’s opponents, Gaborone beat Kgatleng 89-60 after winning all of the four quarters 9-7, 19-13, 27-18 and 34-22 respectively.

Kweneng coach, Boikhutso Tuelo told Mmegi Sport their intention is to finish fifth.

“We had wanted to be among the top four teams, but we failed following our mistakes in the previous matches. We lost two matches and won two matches,” said Tuelo.   He said his players played well, but struggled to finish with poor shooting. Tuelo said the release of the ball went in the wrong direction as players were trying to shoot and score, although the defence and starting was perfect. Kweneng lost the first match to Francistown 46-11, but won the second 44-11 against Kgatleng. They lost the third match 36-28 to Central region before their win over Selebi-Phikwe.

Tuelo said they only had one week to train and that negatively affected his players who were not fit for the competition. “We started training very late because players were still writing their final examinations,” Tuelo said.

The netball finals will be played tomorrow.
