“My contract is coming to an end in February 2016. I have since requested my employer to allow me to leave end of December 2015 for personal reasons. My employer has kindly agreed to release me before February 2016. Consequently, my last day at work shall be 31 December 2015,” Malikongwa wrote in a notice to staff dated December 8, 2015.

The Ministry’s public relations officer, Thobo Thasana confirmed the latest developments. “I can confirm that Mr Malikongwa will be leaving the Ministry. His contract was due for renewal in February but he opted to resign before time,” he said.

Late yesterday afternoon, the Ministry sent a press release confirming the PS’ departure and thanking him for “his contribution, support and encouragement while serving”.

The long-time civil servant’s departure has sparked speculation around the reasons, with sources within the ministry pointing to the souring of relationships in the highest echelons of the ministry.

Malikongwa rose through the ranks in government, from a district officer to senior positions in several ministries, as well as the Government Implementation Coordination Office. Neither Malikongwa nor the minister, Thapelo Olopeng were available for comment yesterday as their phones rang unanswered.
