Alleged baby killer wants access to surviving children

Appearing before Magistrate Gofaone Mosweu, she said even though she had been granted bail, her former boyfriend’s parents had denied her access to her children, despite the absence of a court order restricting her access.

“They took the children when I was in custody but even though I am out on bail, they refuse with my children. I am therefore praying for this court to grant me an order so that I can be allowed to see my children,” she said.

Mokwerekwere is accused of smothering her baby on July 13, 2015 at Tshisi cattle post.

Responding to her plea, Mosweu said there was no reason for Mokwerekwere’s in-laws to deny her access to the children.

“I am of the belief that unless there is a report from a psychiatrist or psychologist giving reasons why the accused should not see the children, the in-laws do not have any right to deny her to see the children,” Mosweu said.

The magistrate advised the state prosecutor to make an application that the accused be given access to her children.

The state prosecutor, Sergeant Mpho Ntlhabane, also told the court that the results of the post mortem in the matter are still being awaited.

“Normally the results should take three to four months, but in this case they have taken a long time for reasons only known to the lab,” he said.
