Bus accident claims one life, six in critical condition

Although investigations are underway, the police said they suspect the bus driver might have lost control of the bus.

“The accident occurred at around 10.05am, along the Makolojwane river,” confirmed Eric Balondi, the traffic boss for the North Central Division. Balondi said the 65-seater public transport bus was enroute to Maun from Gaborone. The suspicion is that after the driver lost control of the bus, it hit two electric poles before reeling off to a nearby tree.

The police confirmed that there were 10 passengers on the bus, including the driver, at the time of the accident. Still on the same day, at 7:30 pm between Topisi and Palapye, another accident claimed the life of one 55-year-old man.

“In the second fatal accident another man died after their car hit stray cattle along the Palapye and Topisi road.

The driver was trapped inside the car for sometime, but unfortunately later died after being admitted at hospital,” confirmed Balondi.

The traffic boss revealed that from January to-date, his area has registered a staggering 77 fatal road accidents leading to 101 deaths. Last year, they recorded 66 accidents that claimed 101 lives.

“This shows that road accidents are on the increase and these are only those with fatalities.

There are other accidents that have no deaths. We encourage drivers and passengers to exercise caution and wear seat belts as well as abide by the stipulated speed limit,” advised Balondi.
