BR Highlanders coach resigns

Highlanders’ spokesperson, Jacob Monyeki confirmed Mokute’s departure. He said they received Mokute’s resignation letter on Sunday, a day after the team lost 4-0 to Miscellaneous.
“As Highlanders management, we called an urgent meeting on Sunday in which we intended to address welfare, technical and other issues.
This followed consecutive losses the team suffered. While still at the meeting, we received the coach’s resignation letter. In it, he stated that he was resigning with immediate effect as results were not forthcoming,” Monyeki said. He said they once wrote a letter to Mokute in November expressing concerns on the team’s poor form.
Monyeki said at their Sunday meeting, they were supposed to discuss Mokute’s future. “We warned him to work hard and try to change his techniques so that the team could improve. He chose what was best for him by resigning as he saw it coming,” Monyeki said.
The Mahalapye-based team has only won one match and sits at position 14 after 15 games. However, Monyeki admitted there is a mess within the team’s management, which might have contributed to Highlanders’ downfall.
Nevertheless, he said the coach should have worked hard because the technical department is the key part of the team.
“We are working on all the issues and hope the team will bounce back.
We believe the material we have can sustain our stay in the Premiership. We intend to beef up the squad with a few players when the transfer window opens in January.”
In the meantime, former assistant coach, Lebitso Ratlou assisted by Kabo Dintwa, will be in charge until the end of the season. Attempts to get Mokute’s comment were futile at press time.
Mokute joined Highlanders towards the end of last season, replacing Paul Moyo for his first head coach job in the elite league.
