League secretary, Sydney Magagane said the tournament can only be possible if there is funding. He said they are yet to meet with the Botswana Football Association (BFA) on how they could be assisted. He told Mmegi Sport that if they find sponsorship, it will mean the commencement of the second round of the league will change. He said logistics of the tournament will depend on the sponsorship as the other idea is to hold the competition in different places. Magagane said they want to take the sport to the people as a way of promoting the league.
“The first round has ended on time and the second round starts on the last week of January. We had a good round because we did not receive major complaints from teams or protests. Our counterparts in the North are yet to wrap up the first round,” he said. He said electronic registration is still outstanding and teams have been given up to January to complete the process.
The first round ended with an upset when lowly placed Modipane United edged second placed Rolling Boys 1-0. Boys finished the first round with 21 points, four points behind leaders, Black Forest. Boys’ spokesperson, Tshiamo Marekwa said the loss was a shock to them. He told Mmegi Sport yesterday that the loss was due to a variety of factors such as the absence of coach, Thaloba Nthaga and complacency of the players. He said when the game started, the players were not robust on attack and the build up was slow.
“My players have the tendency of undermining teams that are below us on the log. We have warned them against that. Despite the loss, we intend to bounce back and fight for the league championship,” said Marekwa.
He said the intention is to beef up the squad with three seasoned players, especially strikers who can score goals for the side. Marekwa said they need a competitive team when the second round resumes.
Meanwhile, Magagane said they want to liaise with the First Division North so that the two leagues can run simultaneously. He said they want them to end at the same time because in the past First Division North had always ended late and that meant teams in the south go for play-offs after staying long without playing. He said that affected their performance in the play-offs.
