High rape cases worry police

“Kweneng District is plagued by a high number of rape incidents,” he said. “The past month alone registered 14 cases of rape. The number might increase because November and December are the months when many criminal activities take place.”

Mookodi said between January and March this year, 70 cases of rape were reported while the months of April-June and July-September registered 51 and 42 rape incidents respectively.

“These are high numbers and are worrisome,” he added. “The public should help the police reduce these incidents.”

Mookodi also said his policing district was marred by robbery cases. Last month, police in the Kweneng District recorded 15 cases of burglary, 12 cases of house break-ins and 10 cases of shop break-ins. There were six robbery cases -- mostly street robberies.

“Crime is always high towards Christmas and it is happening at a time when we have commenced the 60 days of action against crime and road accidents,” he said.

He said people should be patient when the police stop them on the roads and request to search their vehicles. He said the road blocks were meant to save lives as well as catch criminals who are on the run. He advised the public to stay alert when walking on the roadside because most criminals attack unsuspecting pedestrians.
