Troubled BMS to set AGM date

“We will have a meeting next week to discuss among other issues, the date of our AGM, where we will discuss the issues concerning the association.  That’s all I can say now,” Mash told Mmegi Sport yesterday.

The AGM is seen as a key platform to address internal fights in one of the country’s new sporting codes.  The new committee faces mounting allegations of misuse of office with some affiliates reportedly moving towards passing a vote of no confidence.

The straw that finally broke the camel’s back came when some riders failed to complete the annual Toyota 1,000km Desert Race due to shortage of fuel something that infuriated affiliates.

Some affiliates argue BMS committee is not doing enough to meet international standards, as they failed to win the bid to host African Championships, which instead went to Tanzania earlier this year. Some of the affiliates decried poor communication from the committee. The new committee however has come out numerous times pleading for patience from the affiliates.

The committee has decried that some of the affiliates are quick to blame the committee rather than work with them for the benefit of the sport.

Subsequent to the accusations and counter accusations, BMS has cancelled some of the events that were to be held by the Gaborone Motor Club (GMC).  The club is said to have been inactive since the desert race, a move which some of the members of the club feel it was an act of sabotage.  They argue the Maun and Lobelo Club races went on despite not meeting some of standards required for an event of that magnitude.
