Toe-to-toe: Gearbox and Scara face-off ahead of their title bout at the GICC on Friday night

Gearbox and Scara would battle for the WBF Super Bantam Africa belt (65.12kg.) Gearbox said he does not want to knock out Scara, but rather punish his opponent throughout the full 12 rounds.

“I am going to finish him off. He knows me very well. We trained together before. I cannot wait to step into the ring tomorrow night,” an upbeat Gearbox told Mmegi Sport yesterday.

He said preparations started well but were interrupted by the lockdown. The 26-year-old said as a result, he struggled with weight, adding that he has worked hard on his mental strength.

“I am blessed to be training with experienced boxers such as Kgotla ‘Bang Bang’ Baeti and Gomotsang Gaasite. They motivate me all the time,” he said.

For his part, Scara told Mmegi Sport he is ready for Gearbox. “Our camp is ready for war. We have worked hard and it is time to give boxing supporters value for their money.

I am going there for a win, nothing else,” he said.

Scara said it is easy for him to fight against a right-handed opponent, but he is also comfortable with a southpaw.  “I am making my debut in a fight of this magnitude and I want to show the world what I am made of. My last fight was against Tshepho Khutloeng in 2019 and I won,” said the 27-year-old.

Scara and Gearbox are both right-handed boxers. The stakes are high because the two are clashing for the first time in their professional boxing careers.

Event promoter, Thuso ‘Scud’ Khubamang of Scud Promotions told Mmegi Sport that the main bout would be conducted under WBF rules.  He said the Professional Boxing Association of Botswana rules would also apply.

“There are five bouts on the night but we have other two challengers on standby incase of an emergency.

Remember, there is the COVID-19 pandemic so we want to be ready. All boxers have undergone tests and the results were unveiled during weight-in on Thursday,” Khubamang said.

He said a referee from outside the country has been brought in to officiate the title fight. He said WBF president, Howard Goldberg would also be by the ringside as a judge. He added that local officials would also assist.

“There are special gloves for the main bout, which have been bought by the promoter. The gloves weigh eight ounce and they would be inspected before the bout,” Khubamang said.

The title bout is 12 rounds, three minutes per round, with a minute break.

Meanwhile, sparks are expected to fly in the welterweight bout when Baeti clashes with Tshepiso ‘Kurapt’ Mokgadi.

An interesting fight is also expected in another welterweight fight, between Kagiso Bagwasi and Gaasite.

Tshepiso Malabola faces Bokamoso Molaodi in the lightweight division. However, one of the boxers is likely to be replaced by Kefentse Molalapata.

Thabiso Mpolokeng clashes with Moabi Ngaka in a featherweight bout. Zibani Chakanda would try to stop Kenneth Oboeleng in the heavyweight bout.
