Speaking at the BNOC annual general meeting on Monday, Serufho commended government for releasing the funds a year ahead of the competition. This, he said, would help BNOC prepare well for the games. The BNOC received the grant in August.

Serufho said: “This is the first time in history that we have received the grant when there is still significant amount of time before the games. Although the grant is slightly lower than the P10 million we had wished for, we want to congratulate the MYSC for releasing the grant early. We generally received the grant with only a few months, and that made it impossible for BNOC to complete its plans.

“The committee has paid its creditors from last year with the help of the ministry and from the activities we hosted in order to raise the funds. As of now, we cannot release the financial report as the audit is yet to be done. We hope the report will be released by March next year.” BNOC president, Negroes Kgosietsile said the committee was worried by the performance of the women and girls’ teams in all sporting codes. Therefore, the BNOC would give girls’ team 40 percent of the sports youth grant so that they could also prepare well for the games.

About doping, the issue that bedevils athletes’ lives, Kgosietsile said: “Doping is still a problem and as the association we have to double our efforts. As a country we have to do whatever is necessary to prevent such incidents when there is still time.” Meanwhile, Serufho announced the de-registration of the Botswana Gymnastics Association because it was inactive.
