Mahalapye Traffic Division Assistant Superintendent, Kgosienalerona Sechoni, confirmed the incident saying two vehicles collided 10 kilometres outside Mahalapye killing four on the spot and leaving one critically injured.

“The accident occurred around 5:30 am, the morning of Saturday when two cars, the one from Palapye and other from Mahalapye collided and out of a total of six people, only one survived,” he said.

Sechoni explained that the two cars, a Toyota Fortuner had four elderly people, two men and two women between the ages of 61 and 63 while the Toyota Hilux had two men between the ages of 16 and 24 years.

He said the four men died on the spot, one female died on her arrival at the hospital while the only survivor, another woman was hospitalised in a critical condition.

“The four men were critically injured and died on the spot while the only two females survived the immediate collision but unfortunately one died later and all the passengers from both cars are residents of Mahalapye,” he explained.

Sechoni said at the moment they are still investigating what might have caused the accident saying he could not divulge much as next of kin needs to be notified first before the names of the deceased are released.
