Black Zebras,� Mulala on comeback is back in the music circles

Music lovers of that era can remember his acapella group called Black Zebras Choir, who produced a hit song Tsabana ke mojenje.

After two decades of ups and downs in the music industry, the Ikalanga jazz musician Mulala has finally released a six-tracked album entitled Ba buya.

The new album was released last week and it was recorded at M-Squared Records. In an interview with Showbiz, Mulala said he worked with Mpho Matlhong on the album.

Mulala further said the title of the album Ba buya is a Kalanga word which means ‘they have returned’. (The word ba buya is a double entrente as it could also imply ‘handsome people’).

“It’s festive and the elders at home are always happy when their children come home for the holidays; this is a song that relates to this period,” he said.

Mulala said people will get a chance to see him perform at one of the Kalanga Christmas concerts these coming holidays. Even though the album is less than a week old, Mulala said he has already distributed his copies to many media outlets. He has decried poor marketing as one of the major causes of his long absence from the music scene. He said he wants to take his music to Batswana through platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

He said this fourth studio album is much different from the other ones he released in the past. The singer, who started music in 1993, said the new album has a good production and it is a much improved product from the older ones. “I used to work more on acapella but in this album only one song called bongwa is acapella, the rest of the songs have instruments,” he said.

The Mathangwane-born singer worked with Keabetswe ‘Master Dee’ Sesinyi in the past. The duo, including Alfredo Mos and Bafana “Phempheretlhe” Pheto were encouraged bythe late Eitlhopha Mosinyi whose organisation, exporters’ Association of Botswana  encouraged unearthing of talent in Botswana

The country’s music revolution has never the same since then.

The Territory of Christ in Zion pastor said he intends to come up with a centre that can help young people to hone their singing skills.

“My vision is to see people making a living out of their God given talents,” he said.

He has also declared that he wants to work with anyone who is interested in joining and reviving his group.
