Speaking at the region’s special congress in the capital city over the weekend, Monare revealed that it was not easy anymore for the BDP to do house-to-house campaigns in the homes of civil servants. “It used to be easy to do house-to-house campaigns back in the days in civil servants homesteads, but these days it is difficult,” he said, adding that since the party knows why they have not performed well in Gaborone, they have to formulate new strategies to beat the opposition.

The special congress met to formulate reforms as they bid to regain lost constituencies in the 2019 general elections.

Officiating, the BDP Women’s Wing chair Dorcas Makgato said the region should lead by example as it is at the core of everything.

“Gaborone region’s pain is the party’s pain. You are the heartbeat of the party and as such you should come up with ideas, strategies, and tactics to succeed in 2019. The opposition has taken the fight to us, we should fight back with vigour and retain these seats” she said.

Makgato, who is also a Member of Parliament for Sefhare/Ramokgonami and minister of Health, said that the party has taken a decision to give the region special dispensation as the party looks to reclaim the constituencies. BDP won only one out of five Gaborone constituencies in the 2014 general elections.

Makgato revealed that the party president, Ian Khama has asked Gaborone region to come up with new strategies to win the constituencies which the party lost in 2014 elections, adding that the president has promised to support whatever activity the region wants to do.

She cautioned members against internal fights saying they bode ill for the party.

Makgato noted that politics is a game of numbers and members should not view new party recruits as enemies. She said the region should target disgruntled members from the opposition especially Botswana Congress Party (BCP) as it is divided.
