At the special congress, BOPEU resolved that an affirmative action be adopted to recognise the youth and females, who make up the majority of the burgeoning membership of BOPEU that now stand at 31,000.
The new position will be known as Vice president Gender & Youth, and will be open to females up to 35 years of age.
The new constitutional changes are seen as a deliberate move by the trade Union to empower the youth and women, as well as making their voices an agenda in the BOPEU executive Committee deliberations.
In 2009 BOPEU took a decision to introduce the position in their regions and branches.
The BOPEU Congress will vote for six positions of President, two vice presidents, and treasurer. The position of publicity secretary is being phased out as the organisation establishes its own communications unit, while the secretary general and deputy are also no longer elected positions. They now serve as CEO and deputy, on five year terms
