GU committee remains resolute

The current committee has been under fire from some members who are reportedly considering approaching the courts challenging the legitimacy of the committee.
Okaile said although they saw reports in the media, they will remain resolute since they were voted in by the majority of supporters into the committee as per the constitution. He said they held several meetings with the concerned group of supporters in which the members asked the entire committee to step down.
“We made it clear to them that we have been voted in legally by the majority and therefore cannot step down,” he said.
He said the problem emanated from an issue where some members challenged the fact that the meeting where the elections were held did not form a quorum. At that meeting, it was agreed that a clause that talks about a quorum be waived so that the meeting and the elections could go ahead. “It has been happening all the time that this clause was waived and there has never been any problems until this time,” he said.
He said if his committee was illegal because of that reason, then the last legitimate committee was the one that served in 2008 in which he was the treasurer. Okaile said he suspected the issue is more about him standing for elections and winning. He said some members challenged his membership although he has served in the club’s committee before.
“The thing is that in 2011, the club decided to do away with life membership because members paid only once in their lifetime. At that time I was in Australia. And I agreed with the change because the current system allows for continuous generation of income into the club through this membership thing,” he said.
He said since his life membership elapsed while away, the constitution allows everyone in that situation to pay arrears, which he did. He said he does not know why people cast doubts over his membership. He challenged any competent authority to challenge his membership.
“Even if for instance they go to court and the ruling comes out such that elections be held again, I am prepared to take them head on once again and win,” he said. He said all this was a ploy to block him from standing for elections.
He said despite all the challenges, they will continue to administer the club and aim to take it to greater heights as per the mandate given to them by the majority.
“Transition is not an easy thing. I would call it a transition because we were taking over from another committee. Obviously the technical team is still getting used to how the new committee is doing things,” he said.
He said the aim now was to target a top four finish at the end of the season and compete for silverware next season.
“We had wanted to defend the Mascom Top 8 and win the league. We are out of the Top 8 and it does not look like we can challenge for the league this season so we are aiming for top four,” he added. Okaile said GU would also take part in the CAF Confederations Cup to give their players exposure. Moyagoleele are currently linked with several top players in the January transfer window including leading goal scorer, Moatlhodi Ralesotla. However, Okaile could not confirm or deny interest in Ralesotla but did reveal they will beef up their squad in January.
