BoBA explains Oteng�s nomination

The annual awards were not held last year as they coincided with the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) awards.

BoBA spokesperson, Kenny Maragana said the weekend event includes awards from the past year, hence there are two categories for the nominees. Maragana said Oteng Oteng has been nominated as Boxer of the Year for 2014.  He said many people were confused by Oteng’s nomination as he did not participate in any events this year.

He said the boxer has been nominated because of his brilliant performance in the past year. Oteng will be competing against Kagiso Bagwasi and Mooketsi Lekgetho for the Male boxer of the Year award.

The battle for the 2014 Female boxer of the Year is between Pearl Morake, Keneilwe Rakhudu and Tebo Gaotingwe. The Female promising Boxer battle will be between Keamogetse Kenosi, Koketso Dipogiso and Katlego Olatotse.

Maragana said there is also stiff competition for the Male promising Boxer award. Mahummed Otukile is up against Kutlwano Ogaketse and Atang Mosenke. He said the boxers had a good year with Otukile pocketing three gold medals from different competitions.

Master Luza, Thebe Setlalekgosi and Emmanuel Galeboe will battle it out for the Coach of the Year award.

“Some of the boxers have been consistent since last year, winning gold medals back to back. It will be interesting to see who gets the award between Zibani Chikanda, Bagwasi and Thabang Motsewabeng,” he said.

He said Bagwasi stood a good chance of winning the Male boxer of the Year award given his good performance in 2015. The boxer scooped a gold medal at the BoBA national championships in the 64kg category and was selected the best boxer also winning the best bout in the process. On the other hand, Chikanda is a gold medalist in the 75kg category, Zone IV medalist and also brought a silver medal from the Africa championships. Otukile is also nominated for the 2015 junior Male boxer of the Year together with Ogaketse and Mosenke.  The competition for the Female boxer of the Year is between Koketso Dipogiso and Morake. There is a single nominee for Female promising boxer of the Year being Orapeleng Ketshametse. The Kgalagadi north boxing club boxer scooped two awards at the BoBA national championship. She won a gold medal and was voted female promising boxer.
