Two BCP members quit, join BDP

The two have said that they are totally against the BCP’s decision to cooperate with the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), a position recently adopted.

Gaborutwe Thekiso and Kemiso Tom had previously resigned from the BCP, but were persuaded to return.  This time around, however, indications are that they are set in their new political home. The two new BDP members confirmed the latest development yesterday.  “It is true we have resigned from BCP,” Tom said.

“The party leadership is not negotiating with members on the issue of cooperation and they told us that those who are against the cooperation should join the ruling party or stay at their respective homes.

“We cannot be forced to agree on something that we do not believe in and we felt that it was good for us to leave,” said Tom.

He said they notified their former party last Friday about their intention and consulted the Mogoditshane constituency on Sunday.

“We are politicians.  There was need for us to find a new home.  The only choice we had was the BDP,” he said.

The BCP held nationwide consultations on the question of opposition cooperation, receiving support for the move lately.

However, a faction within the party, known as Ditimamolelo, is known to be against the move and is reportedly rallying support from within the party’s ranks.

According to insiders, faction members, including the two resignees, do not have confidence in the UDC leadership and its decision not to disclose the contents of the probe into Gomolemo Motswaledi’s death.
