According to Thapong director, Reginald Bakwena, the awards have shown growth in the number of competition participants.

“Last year we received 84 entries, but this year we got 97 entries and that shows growth as more artists are now showing interest in the awards,” he said.  He added that the artists have also developed in the area of presentation. Bakwena, however, said they are still concerned about the content from the artists.

“There are other areas of weakness and we want artists to work on them,” he said.  Bakwena told Showbiz that a total of four judges were engaged to choose the winners.

“They were made up of three locals and one Zimbabwean and some of them are retired artists who are highly skilled in their work,” he said.

Bakwena indicated that the judges were looking at the guidelines and there was a criterion for every category.  “We were looking at interpretation, originality, quality and many other aspects,” he said.

He said there would be nine categories and they include painting, drawing, installation, ceramic, sculpture, crafts, photography, printmaking and graphic multimedia.
