Thunder Storm Kills Two

The station commander, Paul Seoko, said the dead were a 67-year-old woman of Borotsi ward and a seven-year-old standard one pupil from Mabumahibidu ward.

He said their investigations were continuing  to determine how the two people died.

“We are still waiting for post-mortem results to confirm how they died,” he said. “It is alleged that the girl was hit by a brick that was put at the top of roofing in the house.”

Police withheld the names of the dead until their relatives had been informed. The injured victims were taken to Bobonong Primary Hospital where they were treated and discharged.

Thirty families were left without shelter after the storm destroyed 200 houses.

The public relations officer at Bobonong Sub District Council, Beauty Morobise, said the council had since provided help where it was needed. “We have so far provided 33 homes with tents while 32 people were assisted with food,” she said. “We are still going around the village to assess the condition and we will provide help to the affected people.”

The worst affected parts of the village were Matshekge Senior Secondary School as well as Mabomahibidu, Borotsi and Rasitimela wards. Morobise said the council was expecting the number of affected people to increase as more people came to report that the storm affected them.

Rasetimela’s councillor Thulaganyo Lucas said business was also affected because shops were either destroyed or damaged.

One of the victims of the storm, Lenyatso Mathadisa of Rasetimela ward, said he was forced to make a hole on the wall of his house so that water could flow out. He said he had to travel from Maun to come home and see how his house was affected.
