Maele said his Ministry would repossess undeveloped 64 commercial and industrial plots allocated between 1998 and 2006. He also said the Francistown City Council would soon begin repossessing 94 undeveloped residential plots.

Maele also said that Francistown was running short of plot for churches, adding that the city currently only has 21 civic and communities plots.

The Minister added that the civic and community plots were not allocated automatically but through a bidding process. He explained that civic and community plots are not only allocated to churches but other organisations such as schools.

The minister said his ministry was worried by cases of self-allocation of plots by some churches in Francistown. “I have assigned officers in my ministry to profile all churches in the city that have illegally allocated land to themselves,” he said.

“The process might be completed late this year and by early next year around January we may begin the eviction process.

I plead with Francistown councillors to support the ministry’s plans to evict churches that occupy land illegally.”
