The Business Botswana chairperson, Lekwalo Mosienyane, criticised the council at the opening of its meeting last week.

“It is in the interest of all of us to ensure that the HLCC meetings have a laser-like focus on creating the best environment for growth of the private sector,” he said. “I have noted that parties to the HLCC are concerned about the effectiveness of the HLCC.”

Mosienyane said Business Botswana would submit to the National Strategy Office, proposals to improve the effectiveness of the HLCC. He said Business Botswana wanted the HLCC reformed to deal effectively with topical issues.

The mandate of the National Strategy Office is to lead national strategy development by promoting strategic thinking in the country and catalyse effective policy making and implementation. It launches various diagnostic and detailed studies such as visioning scenario development, desk reviews of relevant socio-political and economic reports, and implementation prioritsation of the Botswana Excellence Strategy all aimed at identifying Botswana’s key social, political and economic challenges and opportunities.

Mosienyane said: “The current economic climate of weak commodity prices including diamonds adds impetus for the HLCC to conduct its business differently and ensure that we do not simply congregate to seek consensus or concure with each.”

The institutionalisation of the HLCC was the culmination of the leaders’ quest for co-operation in and coordination of all matters of economic development. man','serif';mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman';mso-ansi-language:EN-US;mso-fareast-language:EN-US; mso-bidi-language:AR-SA'>Raditladi will now battle it out in the top 12 with developers from the other AMEA region countries.
