Kanye Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officer, Ranchi Olebile, told the Monitor that the long investigations have been completed and that the rest of the suspects will soon be committed to the High Court to stand trial.

“The investigations are now over and what is left is for the Directorate of Public Prosecutions to commit them to the High Court to stand trial for the murder and attempted murder charges,” he said.

Olebile explained that the investigations took longer than expected because the crime was a cross border one that involved a lot of traveling and linking with their Zimbabwean counterparts for more information.

On the two suspects on the run since the robbery early in January, Olebile maintained that it had been difficult to track them down saying that most Zimbabweans use fake names and identities and can skip the country to other countries where they could not be easily traced.

“Despite the suspects being listed with Interpol it is still difficult to trace them as most do not use their real names and it is difficult to trace them using only the database and most of the time they do not run away to their native country. They go as far as South Africa and disappear for long,” he said.

The rest of the suspects, traditional doctor, Evans Mhiwatiwa (43) from Zimbabwe, security officer Gaofenngwe Seitiso (34) of Kanye and unemployed Thuso Tankomane (28) from Molepolole, are currently on bail awaiting trial while Zimbabwean Malibongwe Moyo shot on the leg following a shoot out with the police is still in custody.

He was denied bail on condition that he may skip the country especially that investigations revealed that he was using fake names and had entered the country illegally few days before the robbery.

One suspect died during the shoot out along with the police officer, identified as Constable Focus Isaiah.

They are facing five counts that include armed robbery, murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition and car theft.

The suspects are alleged to have robbed Roschvillie Investment Cash Loan of P87,000 and a Toyota Allex valued at P50,000 before shooting a police constable during an exchange of fire.

Meanwhile still in Kanye, no information has yet been given to the families of the deceased men who reportedly died mysteriously after drinking tea.

Olebile confirmed that the forensic results that were expected this week have not yet been released saying the delay was with the Gaborone lab where exhibits had been sent for analysing.
